| INDICATIONS |
Uro-genital infections, typhoid fever, acute bacterial gastro- enteritis, gonorrhoea, prophylaxis of sepsis in neutropenic patients, STD, ocular infections. |
| MODE OF ACTION |
Norfloxacin acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase en- zyme, which is required for DNA replication and thus causes bacterial lysis. |
| ONSET OF ACTION |
30 to 60 minutes. |
| DURATION OF ACTION |
8 to 12 Hrs. |
| ADVERSE EFFECT |
Nausea, epigastric discomfort, abdominal cramps, anorexia, diarrhoea, sleep disturbances, skin rash and irritability. |
| CONTRAINDICATION |
Hypersensitivity; pregnancy & lactation. |
| SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS |
Renal impairment, patients with history of epilepsy, hydra- tion, urinary output, excessive sun light. |
| DRUG INTERACTIONS |
Antineoplastic drugs: decrease serum level of norfloxacin. Caffeine: enhanced efficacy of caffeine. Oral anticoagulants: enhanced effect of anticoagulants. Cyclosporine : Nephrotoxicity increased by norfloxacin. Theophylline: increased plasma level of theophylline resulting in toxicity. |
| DOSES |
Adults: Typhoid fever- 400 mg. twice daily for 15 days. UTI 400 mg. twice dailyfor3days to 3weeks. Gonorrhoea; 800 mg. as single dose. Acute bacterial gastroenteritis 400 mg. 2-3 times daily for 5 days. Prophylaxis of sepsis in neutropenic patients 400 mg 2-3 times daily upto 3 weeks. Children-not recommended. |
